About
Professor Alan Liew is Head of the School of Information and Communication Technology at Griffith University and an internationally recognised researcher in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, medical imaging, computer vision and bioinformatics. His research focuses on advanced, trustworthy and translational AI methods for complex real-world problems, particularly in health and biomedical applications.
At Griffith he founded the AI4Health Lab, which he leads, and co-founded the TrustAGI Lab, which he co-leads. His current research spans AI for health and medical imaging, multimodal learning, trustworthy and explainable AI, graph learning and foundation models, computer vision, machine learning and bioinformatics. A major emphasis is translating advances in AI into real-world applications through collaboration with clinicians, health researchers, scientists, government and industry, including Gold Coast University Hospital and Queensland Health.
Professor Liew joined Griffith University in 2007. Before that he was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Electrical Engineering at City University of Hong Kong.
He has published more than 300 journal and conference papers and two books, and holds three international patents.

Supervision
Since joining Griffith he has achieved 34 PhD completions, 20 as Principal Supervisor. He currently supervises doctoral researchers working on multimodal medical AI, trustworthy and explainable AI, graph foundation models, large language models, privacy-preserving learning, medical image analysis, image and video understanding, and AI applications in health and engineering.
